Position Title :Field Scientist
Work Location : Kolkata, West Bengal,India
Purpose:
Conducts and/or monitors trials to characterize the field performance of crop protection products in line with technical objectives provided by the function and pertinent company stewardship guidelines. Develops key technical objectives, drafts protocols and designs biology plan of work for field scientists in consultation with key stakeholders. Summarizes data at the local level and contributes to regional and global field data summaries for robust product characterization. Provides local knowledge on crop management practices, issues, and trends to Crop Protection Discovery & Development (CPD&D) teams as well as the commercial organization. Supports product launches as part of a cross-functional team in the Commercial Unit. R
Interacts with:
Different roles within CPD&D and Commercial functions. The role supports Sales Representatives with technical education and interacts with Regulatory Specialists. External interactions include state agricultural universities and govt research institutions, agricultural officials, growers and technical as well as commercial staff of distributors (customer facing role).
Skills:
Broad scientific and agronomic understanding of field and horticultural crops.
Able leadership to execute the field trial program with an ability to select optimal trial sites in respective hot spots, good understanding of trial designs and summarizing the data.
In depth knowledge on summarizing protocols with cross trial analysis to support the product advancement.
Able to lead projects with effective resource management. Versatile individual who can solve practical problems in remote locations where trials are executed often with a strong commitment to safety and stewardship culture.
Ability to interact with growers and to give clear directions to extended team members.
Good command of English as well as local languages (Bengali, Hindi) that are relevant to the allocated territory.
Key responsibilities:
Accountable for flawless field trial execution: Selecting sites based on technical objectives, understanding and writing of protocols, forecasting sample needs and organizing local shipments of test items. Accountable for exact planning, applications and evaluations at prescribed intervals as well reliable upload of data to pertinent data bases.
Accountable to ensure the crop destruction after trial completion according to local regulations.
Organizes field tours during critical assessment window and selects appropriate trials to support decision making in a regional/global trial program.
Summarizes data from own trials as well as data from other field scientists and provides key observations and recommendations on product performance to the Program Leader in CPD&D and cross functional product development teams.
Assists CPD&D experts in strategy of local data generation for pipeline and existing products to ensure optimal technical value propositions for robust launch of the product.
Evaluates the field performances, understands resistance issues, identifies trends and issues relative to current and emerging competition in the assigned territory.
Proposes technical positioning to the Portfolio Leadership Teams based on local needs and requirements in the assigned territory.
Serves as R&D expert and technical focal point for specific products and crops in the assigned territory.
Represents organization at relevant academic and government institutes in the assigned territory, and documents emerging trends and technology related to agriculture.
Serves as key member of product concept team with key stake holders including Marketing, Regulatory, Portfolio leaders, business team etc., local level.
Provides input on the critical assessment and prioritization of technical needs and activities essential to the implementation of business strategy.
Key activities in the Organization:
Assists local Marketing and Commercial teams in providing technical support and training with organization’s portfolios, with special emphasis on Field Sciences.
Works with Zonal Biology Leads to develop new uses/markets in the regions for increased sales/penetration.
Works with Biology Leaders in CPD&D to achieve technical objectives through field trials.
Works with Regulatory specialists to ensure that all trial work is done in compliance with local regulations.
Works with cross functional team to provide technical support on next-generation pest control and ag practices.
Qualifications
Qualifications
A Ph.D. degree in Agricultural Entomology from a reputed Agricultural University with a minimum of three years of experience in crop protection industry is a must.
Practical knowledge on importance of crop protection with crop/pest phenology for the field and horticultural crops pertinent to the respective geography would be candidate’s advantage.
Applicants should have an in-depth knowledge of the theories and practices of agricultural science and a demonstrated proficiency in conducting and publishing refereed research.
Candidates must have a demonstrated ability to transfer technology through scientific presentation and publication.
The job requires practical knowledge of education techniques and expertise for transferring technical information to diverse audiences.
