The Elevator Pitch: Why will you enjoy this new opportunity?
The Enterprise networking world is undergoing fundamental changes. Digital transformation initiatives around industry 4.0, smart retail/distribution, healthcare automation and many other areas is necessitating the need for access networks like private 4G, 5G and beyond as opposed best-effort ones like Wi-Fi. Moreover, in these scenarios, end-client devices require SLA-driven connectivity and access to application workloads that are both on-premise at the “Edge” as well as in multiple clouds.
VMware has a unique role to play in enabling this new environment. Specifically, while the underlying network technologies such as the 4G/5G Radio Access and Core networks are understood and built by experienced partners, the ability to dynamically orchestrate these networks in conjunction with edge and multi-cloud computing, cloud-native security, and software defined networking to stitch all together is a role VMware is well suited for.
This is a role in the formation of the team that will be building this Private Mobile Networks orchestration platform. It’s a full-stack role, responsible for API and web design, development, and cross product integration using Typescript, Angular, NodeJS, MySQL, Redis, and various AWS services like RDS, S3, and ECS. If you’re interested in working within a small, high-performance team using modern webapp frameworks and various languages to build products, this is the team you want to join.
Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?
Within one month of employment, you should expect to ramp up on the technical stacks and set up your dev environment. The project is early-stage and thus challenging and fast moving, so expect to be thrown into feature development as soon as possible.
Within six months of employment, you should expect to have developed features necessary for customer betas of the product.
Within a year of employment, you should be expected to take on new feature development for the GA version of the project and drive features from design to implementation.
The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?
The work will involve both frontend and backend API development used by both internal teams and external partners and customers. You will also work on integrating with partners’ RAN and Core networks management systems, as well as other VMware products (e.g. vSphere, SD-WAN, ENI, etc).
You will need to code in NodeJS, TypeScript, and Angular and be passionate about unit-testing. We expect you to already have some expertise in at least one of the major webapp frameworks: NodeJS, Django, and Spring. In addition, you need to be very comfortable with at least one of the following programming languages: Typescript/Javascript, Python, Java. You will need to interact with MySQL and Redis, hence you should have hands-on experience with both sql and nosql DB(s). Familiarity with Kubernetes, microservices, docker containers is highly desirable.
Our cloud service is running in the AWS today, so prior experience working on cloud-based backend is preferred. You will take complete ownership of your tasks end-to-end which includes design, implementation, unit testing and deployment of the product/service.
What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?
The team will be a small, cross-functional team with folks from the SEBU CTO group, SASE Engineering as well as the Telco and Edge computing teams. As the team scales, you will be expecting to become a domain expert in the area you own and be able to lead on the projects falling in your area of expertise. The team culture is challenging and fast paced, but with good people that are ready to help each other and support each other and be successful together. We have people from different backgrounds, and we believe a diverse team can help sparking innovation.
Where is this role located?
Flexible: The location of this role is flexible within India, principally in Bangalore or Chennai. Work will be done from an office some days during a week and other days from a non-VMware building.
